Fishing harbour planned at Mookaiyur

Aim is to prevent fishermen from crossing International Maritime Boundary Line

RAMANATHAPURAM: With the aim of relocating a section of interested Rameswaram fishermen to prevent them from crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line, the State Government has decided to construct a fishing harbour and auction hall at T. Mookaiyur near Kadaladi.

The decision was taken at a meeting of coastal district officials, convened by Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, in Chennai recently. It discussed ways and means to improve coastal security and fishermen issues.

    T. Mookaiyur is a seashore hamlet situated along the Gulf of Mannar. This part of the sea is considered deeper than the Palk Strait near Rameswaram, where there are nearly 700 mechanised boats.

Officials say Rameswaram fishermen sometimes cross the IMBL for a good catch. They incur a huge loss if they fish in the shallow waters of Palk Strait, where the fish wealth is less. The advantage of promoting Mookaiyur as an important fishing hub of the district is that there is no need for fishermen to go far away from the hamlet, as they used to from Rameswaram. They could get good hauls at the nearest points from Mookaiyur.
