Three arrested for train robbery

BANGALORE: The Railway police on Saturday arrested three persons who had allegedly robbed five women on Mysore-Shimoga Express on January 15, and recovered from them gold jewellery estimated at Rs. 75,000. The police gave the names of the arrested as Shankar, Pranesh and Yoganand, all from Mandya district. They are on the lookout for their two accomplices, Shiva and Umesh. — Staff Reporter

Vanilla price may go up

Madikeri: The price of vanilla crop is expected to go up in India following destruction of crops caused by cyclone at Madagascar, the leading vanilla growing region in the world, according to P.G. Pemmaiah, president of the Kodagu Vanilla Growers' Association, here on Saturday. Wildlife warden

TUMKUR: The Government appointed T.V.N. Murthy as Honorary Wildlife Warden for Tumkur District, according to a release issued by Nisarga Wildlife Aware Nature Club.Club president B.V. Gundappa said Mr. Murthy had been the chief consultant of the club on all matters of wildlife preservation. Mr. Murthy was the first to establish the presence of tigers in the State Reserve Devarayana Durga Forests in Tumkur district. He was responsible for setting up the Jayamangali National Park for Blackbucks in Madhugiri taluk. — Staff Correspondent

SI selection

Bangalore: The committee for the selection of police sub-inspectors on Friday announced the list of candidates provisionally selected at the Corps of Detectives Office, Carlton House, Palace Road.

According to a press release here, the results are also available on the official website karnatakastatepolice.org. The release said that this is the largest recruitment of sub-inspectors held in the State. — Staff Reporter

Mahaveer Jayanti

BELLARY: A distribution of fruits and clothes, and a procession marked the celebration of Mahaveer Jayanti here on Saturday. Members of the Jain community took out a procession through the main streets of the city. Members of the Jain Yuvaka Sangha distributed fruits to patients at Government hospitals and clothes to poor people near the Jain Roti Ghar.

President of the Sangha Anil Bagrecha Pumani Surajmal Jain was among those who led the procession. — Staff Correspondent

Funds for water

BIDAR: The drinking water problem may aggravate once summer sets in, Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil said here on Saturday. As many as 65 villages in the district are suffering from drinking water scarcity. A list has been prepared of affected villages and the State Government has sanctioned Rs. 14.15 crore for relief projects. Narsingrao Suryavanshi, MP; MLA Prakash Khandre, zilla panchayat member Kushal Yaba and others were present.

Ganja seized

BIJAPUR: During an early morning raid, the police seized 2.5 quintals of ganja worth Rs. 2 lakh from a house at Navabag Colony here and arrested four persons. Those arrested are: Hussein Khajasab Almel and his brothers Salim, Dastgir and Munna. Additional Superintendent of Police S. Shivanand told The Hindu that the accused had confessed to the crime during interrogation. They used to market ganja in Maharashtra after procuring it from Andhra Pradesh. — Staff Correspondent

Protest

GULBARGA: The Students Federation of India (SFI) on Saturday staged a protest against the judgement of the Supreme Court staying the provision of the constitutional amendment providing reservation for the OBCs in higher education. The protest was led by the All India Joint Secretary of the organisation P.K. Biju and other office-bearers of the State, including State president Rajasekharamurthy. — Special Correspondent

Students debarred

GULBARGA: In all, 12 students appearing in the pre-university examination were debarred on the second day of the pre-university examinations on Friday.

Ten others were expelled from different examination centres for indulging in malpractices.

The number of students debarred from the examinations in the district has risen to 23. — Special Correspondent

DHARWAD: Dharwad Zilla Lingayat Mahasabha will organise a convention of Lingayats at the Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan in Dharwad on Sunday. Addressing presspersons here, Mathe Satyadevi of the Jaganmata Akkamahadevi Ashram said the convention was being held in association with Rashtriya Basavadala, Jaganmata Akkamahadevi Ashrama and Yuva Rashtriya Basavadala. HUBLI: South Western Railway has decided to continue running slip coach services between Hubli and Vasco for three more months, according to a press release. Accordingly, the services of slip coaches by Hubli-Miraj Link/Nizamuddin-Vasco Goa Express (1048/2780) between Hubli and Vasco-da-gama and Vasco-Nizamuddin Goa Express/Kolhapur-Bangalore Rani Channamma Express (2779/6590) between Vasco-da-gama and Hubli with transfer of coaches at Londa will be now available till June 30, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Mourned

HUBLI: Chand Peer Educational Welfare and Charitable Trust, Hubli, mourned the death of Sufi Hazrat Syed Akbar Mohammed Mahmudal Hussaini, educationist and vice-president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, on Friday. In a message, president of the trust Basha Peeran said that the death of Mohammed Hussain, who dedicated his life for the cause of education, was a loss to society. — Staff Correspondent

Five die in road accident

HASSAN: Three people died on the spot and two in hospital after a tanker collided with a multi-utility vehicle on NH 48, near Chennarayapatna, in the early hours of Saturday. While the multi-utility vehicle was heading towards Mangalore from Bangalore, the Tanker was headed in the opposite direction, the police said.

The dead were identified as Kusuma, 28, Nagu Bai, 75, Babu Rao, 45, Prema, 40 and Nagaratna 35. — Staff Correspondent

`Kabini chalo' protest launched

BANGALORE: The Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samithi, a federation of nearly 500 Kannada organisations, launched `Kabini chalo' on Saturday from Bangalore in protest against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Leaders and activists of several pro-Kannada organisations began a march to the Kabini reservoir under the leadership of Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj demanding that the tribunal award be rejected and the Kabini Second Stage irrigation project be implemented. — Special Correspondent

Deve Gowda to meet Ministers, legislators

BANGALORE: Janata Dal (S) national president H.D. Deve Gowda has decided to hold a daylong consultation here on April 11 with party legislators and Ministers on political developments, including the forthcoming elections to urban local bodies.

Party spokesman Y.S.V. Datta told The Hindu that the proposed meeting would also discuss the State Budget, developments during the legislature session and steps needed to strengthen the party.

Ban orders around Vidhana Soudha

BANGALORE: Ban orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be in force within a 1-km radius around the Vidhana Soudha from 6 a.m. on April 2 to the midnight of April 5.

Commissioner of Police Neelam Achuta Rao has imposed the ban orders in view of the ongoing legislature session, an official press release said. — Staff Reporter
