Bangalore: The former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation U.R. Rao has said that the proposed sex education module for schools in the State can "perturb and harm young minds." In a letter to Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S. Horatti, he said, "I am in complete agreement with providing basic sex education to children and informing them about AIDS. However, I am sure you will agree that the texts written on the subject of sex have to be carefully edited and taught by competent and qualified teachers who understand the psychology of young minds." He has suggested holding detailed discussions on the subject with experts, teachers and parents.
Memorandum given
Members of the State unit of the All-India Save Education Committee met Mr. Horatti and submitted a memorandum demanding withdrawal of the sex education module being circulated as part of the Adolescent Education Programme. The memorandum was signed by the freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy, the retired judge A.J. Sadashiva, the retired Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University M.S. Thimmappa, the writer Vyasaraya Ballal and others.
