KOTTAYAM: In an election marked by allegations of corruption and boycott by the Kerala Students Union, the Students Federation of India (SFI) was swept to office in the University Union elections at Mahatma Gandhi University held on Friday. Dhanya Vijayan, final-year B.Sc. student of Government College, Kottayam, is the new chairperson. She secured 140 of the 143 votes polled. Sreekanth S, B.Sc. final-year student from Government College, Kattappana, who secured 139 votes, has been elected general secretary. The three vice-chairpersons are Athira Raju of NSS College; Rajakumari Jith Raj of St. Mary's College, Mannarkkad; and Lesly Thomas of Mt. Zion Engineering College, Kadamattom. Jubi P. George of Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta, and Sanal Chacko of Mar Thomas College of Management and Technology, Perumbavur, are the joint secretaries. A 15-member executive committee and five-member accounts committee have also been elected. KSU president Hybee Eden alleged malpractice as most of their political councillors were removed from the voters' list. He said the election was conducted in a manner so as to ensure that only the SFI candidates were elected. This prompted the KSU to boycott the election, he said.
