Knee replacement at low cost

MAHABUBNAGAR: For the first time in the medical history of Mahabubnagar district, complete knee replacement was done successfully at the local SVS Hospital here by orthopaedic surgeon and managing director of SVS Medical College, K.J.Reddy, charging less than many corporate hospitals. Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Dr. Reddy said that total knee replacement costs around Rs 2.5 lakhs at corporate hospitals, but it was done in SVS Hospital by charging only around Rs 80,000.

Dr Reddysaidthat compared to western countries the conditions in India were good for surgery and many people from those countries were coming to India for knee replacement.

The hospital authorities produced Basi Reddy, a farmer who had undergone knee replacement surgery in their hospital, before the media. Before the surgery, Basi Reddy (71), who was unable even to fold his leg, is now able to walk free.
