NEW DELHI: Dyal Singh College of Delhi University has suspended a teacher, R.K. Sinha, after the University's Apex Complaints Committee found him guilty of harassing a colleague.
Entry barred
Stating that the notice was served on Mr. Sinha on Friday, college Principal Inder Bakshi said "his entry to the college has been barred for the next three months". A woman teacher of the College had complained against Mr. Sinha in 2005, alleging that he had used obscene language with reference to her. Following the complaint, the College had set up an inquiry that found the accused guilty. The Governing Body then recommended termination of the accused. When the issue was taken up with Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental, he referred it for a fresh inquiry to the University's Apex Complaints Committee. The Governing Body has now accepted the recommendations of the Apex Committee stating that (a) Mr. Sinha execute a bond pledging that he would not repeat such behaviour for which he has been found guilty; (b) he would forgo as a penalty three annual increments on his salary; (c) he would be suspended for a period of three months and would not be allowed into the college premises during that period; and (d) he would never be made a member of any committee of any statutory body. Welcoming the decision of the Governing Body to penalise Mr. Sinha, the Democratic Teachers' Front said the verdict should have come long ago.
Punitive action recommended
"The Apex Complaints Committee concluded its inquiry and recommended punitive action in its report that was given to the Vice-Chancellor months ago. But it was only recently that it was forwarded to the college Governing Body for necessary action. Even after this, there was a lot of unnecessary delay in executing the decision," said DUTA executive member Rajeev Kunwar.
