Marginal fall in patient turnout in hospitals

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The three government hospitals, including the General Hospital, and the institutions in Royapuram and Royapettah, witnessed a marginal fall in the number of people seeking their services, owing to the 12-hour bandh on Saturday.

Though attendance in public hospitals that cater to the poor was not seriously affected, fewer people came to the hospitals. Authorities at Government Stanley Hospital in Royapuram said the hospital usually received 5,000 patients a day. A staff at the hospital said people made their own arrangement. "People came in share autorickshaws and cyclerickshaws."

On Saturday, it recorded 4,500 visitors to its outpatient departments. Government Royapettah Hospital, had registered 23 patients until 3 p.m. Normally, the hospital receives over 70 cases. The Government General Hospital opposite Central Station, received almost the usual number of road traffic accident victims, said the staff. However, the outpatient wards were far less crowded than normal days. At Kilpauk Medical College, the casualty and the outpatient wards registered very low patient turnout.
