People's support clear: Karunanidhi

Criticises AIADMK, MDMK for negative response to invitation

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday said the dawn-to-dusk bandh in support of the demand for reservation for Other Backward Classes in Central educational institutions of excellence was a grand success.

In a statement here, he said as expected, the whole State came to a standstill, demonstrating people's support for the cause of social justice.

He thanked leaders and activists of political parties, business community, trade union activists, small traders, industrial houses, press and the public for extending support for the bandh.

Mr. Karunanidhi flayed All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko for their negative response to the invitation extended to support the bandh.

He explained the circumstances under which the DMK and its alliance partners decided to call for the bandh. Though the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam issued a statement in support of the bandh, the AIADMK and the MDMK did not back the protest programme, he said.
