Fatal accident: residents stage protest

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: Agitated over a fatal accident involving a lorry, residents of Kovilanchery and Madurapakkam villages near Tambaram organised a protest on the road, preventing the police to remove the body for post-mortem for more than five hours.

While the police claim that the victim, Marimuthu (49) died of head injuries after ramming his two-wheeler into the lorry residents say the accident took place when the lorry was backing up and that this was the latest in a series of fatal accidents involving lorries on Mambakkam Main Road.

Though personnel from the Selaiyur police station rushed to the spot, the protesters did not allow them to shift the body.

They demanded stringent action against the lorry driver and its owner.

The accident took place around 3.30 p.m. and it was not before 9 p.m. that the residents dispersed.

Traffic police have also commenced their investigations and said the exact cause of the accident would be ascertained in a couple of days after a thorough probe.
