RARE HONOUR: A still from `Veyil' with actors Bharath and Bhavana. The film will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
CHENNAI: `Veyil' will represent Indian cinema at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The third film from director Shankar's production house won critical and popular acclaim for its realistic narration of the tale of two brothers in the backdrop of the Virudhunagar area. The film was chosen by the Directorate of Film Festivals, Government of India, and sent for selection to Cannes, said director Vasantha Balan. It would be screened in the `Cinemas of the World' section on May 19.
First film
The director, who would be at Cannes for the screening, said Shankar was instrumental in the film's release. This would be the first Tamil film at Cannes, he said. Mr. Balan earlier went on record that the film narrated a slice of his life. Director Shankar said in a statement that `Veyil' had all the ingredients of a world classic. The story follows Murugesan (Pasupathy), the eldest sibling, as he runs away from home and assists a film projectionist, on the lines of `Cinema Paradiso.' His ill-fated romance develops alongside the success of his brother in advertising. Music is scored by G.V. Prakash, nephew of music director A.R. Rahman. Actors Bharath, Bhavana and Shreya Reddy are part of the cast. The film has also been sent for selection for the Shanghai film festival.
