Vijayawada
Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA : The CPI(M) city unit has demanded that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) roll back the hike in the charges collected towards donation, deposit, road cutting and restoration for laying underground drainage (UGD) lines. The party has expressed the view that the hike will place an additional burden of Rs. 10 crores on people. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Ch. Babu Rao, party floor leader in the VMC general body, said that the corporation hiked the charges exorbitantly in the last two years. A common citizen would now have to shell out as much as Rs. 5,000 for getting a UGD connection to his house. Until a couple of years ago, the connection could be had by paying just Rs. 1,200. He asserted that the Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam was not collecting any donation for the UGD connections.
No scientific approach
Alleging that there was no scientific approach in fixing the fees for the UGD connections, Mr. Babu Rao expressed the view that the road cutting and restoration expenses could not be more than Rs. 1,500 in any case. Mr. Babu Rao said neither the Standing Committee nor the general body were taken into confidence before increasing the fees. He also lamented that the VMC officials had no respect for the resolution passed by the general body.
