Pension on first of every month

Staff Reporter

VMC makes a beginning today

  • 12,000 persons to get pensions in 59 divisions
  • Applications sought for sanction of new pensions

VIJAYAWADA: Pensioners have a reason to smile now. Their pensions would henceforth be distributed in all the divisions on the first day of every month. Making a beginning on Sunday, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials would distribute about 12,000 pensions, including those for the aged, in all the 59 divisions of the city.

Until now, there was no fixed date and time for distribution of pensions for the aged, widows, weavers and the physically challenged in the division level meetings. The pensioners had to wait for days together to receive the meagre sum of Rs.200 a month.

VMC's Urban Community Development (UCD) wing Project Officer Z. Srinivasa Rao said on Saturday that the pensions, hereafter, would be distributed on the 1st and 5th days of every month. Those pensioners who failed to receive the amount on the first day could receive the same on the 5th day.

    Process begins

The Government also invited applications for sanctioning new persons for the aged, widows, physically challenged and weavers under Indiramma programme. The VMC officials would receive the applications at the designated places in all the divisions. The process began on Friday and would continue till April 7, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said.

A committee under the chairmanship of local corporator would recommend the eligible persons in all the four categories. The applications would be scrutinised based on the data available with the VMC before April 10 and presented to the division level meetings to register objections, if any.

Any person who crossed 65 years of age would be eligible for receiving old age pension, while the persons applying under the physically challenged quota should have at least 40 per cent disability. The eligible person would be given a pension of Rs. 200 a month.
