HOPING FOR THE BEST: Aspirants at `The Hindu Opportunities Job Fair-2007' at Hitex Convention Centre on Saturday.-- PHOTO: K. RAMESH BABU
HYDERABAD: For some, it was a day when better avenues in the software and IT-enabled sector beckoned, promising them a bright future. For others, the day turned out to be a memorable learning experience, which would hold them in good stead in the future. Scores of gifted, experienced and a few `wide-eyed' graduates, fresh from the college, turned up in large numbers on the inaugural day of the two-day `The Hindu Opportunities Job Fair-2007', which has over 5,000 jobs to offer, at Hitex Exhibition Grounds, Madhapur.
Heaps of CVs
The morning started on a high note with candidates lining up for registrations and heading for their respective kiosks at brisk pace. The Hitex hall was bustling with hectic activity, as HR managers and executives got busy sifting through heaps of CVs. While some lucky ones managed to get plum jobs, others, especially freshers seemed to be more interested in soaking up the experience of facing an interview and getting rejected. "I did not get any job, but they advised me to brush up my communication skills and apply again. It's a great learning experience for me because this is the first time I am coming to a job fair," says Chandan Chaterjee. There was no dearth of the lucky ones either. "I badly needed a relocation to Chennai from Hyderabad because of personal reasons. This job fair helped me shift my base," says gaming professional P. Natarajan.
Kiosks
The companies that opened up their kiosks in the job fair include Cognizant, Convansys, EMRI, HCL, Wipro, Slash Support, Nipuna, HSBC, Patni, Verizon, Brigade, Allsec Technologies, Ajuba Solutions, Atlas Systems, Efficient frontiers, Flexiworks, Godavari Institute of Technology, NIIT, Persisstant Computer Systems, and Saksoft. "There is no limit for the number of candidates we are willing to take-in. Sunday once again would be a hectic day for us," said Global Head of Resourcing for Cognizant, Venkatesan Sheshadri. Human Resource Mangers of Ajuba Solutions were pleasantly surprised by the success rate in getting good candidates for their offshore voice-based operations for hospitals in US. "This is the first time we have come here and the going is good when compared to job fairs in Chennai. In the first few hours, we managed to give away offer letters to 13 candidates. We are hoping that by tomorrow, we would be able to rope in another 20 or so," says Director HR, Shankar Narasimhan.
40 offers
At the end of the first day, Cognizant made 40 offers and short-listed 100 candidates, Brigade came up with 13 and Ajuba with another 13. EMRI short-listed 133 candidates for its call centre, 78 for other functions and short-listed 73 applicants as office assistants. Convansys short-listed 52 applicants. Slash Support came up with offer letters to 14 and Atlas Systems gave away offer letters to two candidates. `The Hindu Opportunities Job Fair-2007' would be open on Sunday from 10 a.m. The event's Presenting Partner is Cognizant, while the Platinum Partner is Patni. The two-day event is being organised by The Hindu Opportunities in partnership with Eenadu and its associate sponsors are Verizon and Convansys. Etv2 and Big FM 92.7 FM are its media sponsors, the APSRTC, its transport partner and TMI First is the technology partner.
