UP IN ARMS: Volunteers of Cubbon Park Mitra Sangha staging a protest in Bangalore on Saturday. Photo: K. Gopinathan
Bangalore: Members of Hasiru Husiru and Cubbon Park Mithra Sangha put their best foot forward to Saturday to walk to save the Cubbon Park. Their protest walk, from the High Court till the Queen's Statue, was against the proposed Rs. 32-crore underground parking facility near the High Court for which around 40 large trees will be cut. They alleged that the Public Works Department, which last year said it would construct the facility without damaging the tree cover, is now getting ready to fell many trees. The activists said the facility was redundant because considering there are Circuit Benches coming up in Dharwad and Gulbarga, work would be distributed among them, cutting down on litigants and their vehicles. Vijay Kumar, tree warden, said: "We filed a writ petition in February. We will go to the Supreme Court if need be. It is a citizen's right to breathe good air."
