Action against institutions with no infrastructure

Staff Reporter

Kerala University issues a stern warning

  • Syndicate says institutions duping national councils
  • To identify such colleges and alert national bodies

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala will take steps to ensure that self-financing colleges affiliated to it have the required infrastructure and may also consider cancelling the affiliation of institutions operating without the requisite infrastructure.

This was decided at the meeting of the university Senate here on Friday. Syndicate member A.A. Rasheed told the meeting that some self-financing institutions were found functioning without adequate infrastructure facilities.

This came to light during lightning inspections conducted by the university. These institutions were tricking national bodies such as the Nursing Council into believing that they had the facilities required for recognition.

Later, these institutions got the no-objection certificate for temporary affiliation on the grounds that they had the recognition from these national bodies.

In fact it should even be suspected that there were agencies that arranged for these self-financing institutions to have `facilities' during the visits of teams from the national bodies, a press note here quoted Mr. Rasheed as saying.

The Syndicate would not hesitate to cancel the affiliation of institutions that do not have adequate infrastructure facilities, he said. He was replying to an adjournment motion on this issue moved by Senate member A. Prathapachandran.

The university would identify such institutions and notify national councils about their infrastructure facilities, he added.

The Syndicate would intervene effectively to integrate learning, research and extension activities of the university, Syndicate member B.S. Rajeev said. He was replying to a discussion on the annual report of the university for 2006. The Senate later accepted the report.
