TIRUCHI: With a view to facilitating researchers to convert data they gather into a fixed format suiting statistical analysis by themselves, Bharathidasan University plans to offer training in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) on a continuous basis. There is a dire need for researchers in various subjects for getting an exposure to data analysis since a basic grounding in statistical methods and techniques is not a part of the curriculum. In most cases, the researchers spend substantial time, energy and money in outsourcing statistical experts for analysing data and interpreting results. The university seeks to facilitate scholars to complete their projects in time. An understanding of statistics must be internalised since statistical experts who are adept at data analysis need a hardcore understanding of the subjects for interpreting the results. The quality of result interpretation and the thesis will be better if the research scholars do data analysis and result interpretation by themselves, the Vice-Chancellor C. Thangamuthu said, advocating a thorough understanding of the subject for correlating variables and formulating knowledge. He was addressing the valedictory of a four-day workshop on `Applications of SPSS Packages to Social Scientist' jointly organised by the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension and the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development. Mr. Thangamuthu distributed certificates to 31 M.Phil and research scholars who underwent the workshop. The Programme Co-ordinator, A. Pandurangan, said that the workshop was designed to impart practical knowledge of data analysis.
Participants
The participants included six M.Phil. and research scholars from Sri Venkateswara University and Sri Padmavathi Women's University in Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh. Offering their feedback, a few participants said a practical exposure to the topic was rare in South India. The Director of the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, K. Parthasarathy, said that the workshop was conducted free of cost with funds provided by the University Grants Commission under the Tenth Five Year Plan.
