CHENNAI: BPCL defeated Indian Navy 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20 in the final of the SRM all-India invitation men's volleyball tournament at the SRM University campus here on Sunday. In each and every set, BPCL had to dig deep to win points. Indian Navy could have made a match out of it had it not been for some basic mistakes at crucial stages of the match.
Turning point
The turning point emerged in the third set. After reducing BPCL's lead from 20-16 to 23-21, Navy let go an ideal opportunity to take the lead. BPCL won a point at this stage when setter Anil came up with a drop. Navy disputed the point following which referee P. Ganapathi ordered a re-serve. Shijas apparently had an altercation with the referee forcing the latter to show a yellow card and a point was awarded to BPCL. For BPCL, Tom Joseph, as usual, did his job to perfection. He got better with each set, while the pair of Sayooj and Azeez excelled in blocking. Navy did have its chances even in the fourth set, but frittered them away. The results: Final: BPCL bt Indian Navy 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20. Semifinals: BPCL bt Southern Railway 25-17, 25-23, 25-18; Indian Navy bt Cochin Port Trust 25-13, 25-14, 25-22. Third place: Cochin Port Trust bt Southern Railway 25-27, 25-21, 14-25, 26-24, 15-10.
