CHENNAI: Thanks to the growth in job opportunities much more than what was projected, Anna University hopes to achieve cent per cent placement in a year or two, Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said on Sunday. Addressing reporters after distributing appointment orders to 320 engineering students, selected by different information technology companies, here on Sunday, he said the feat was within the reach of the university, which had taken steps to improve the communications skills of its students. The subject had been made mandatory for two years and its content developed in consultation with the industry. The 320 students were selected from among 2,300 students. A majority of the successful candidates were girls. Welcoming the Government's initiatives to develop software parks in Tier-II cities, he said India, with its 50-crore youth population, had a tremendous advantage over other nations. The Tamil Nadu State-Level Placement Programme has so far helped 14,389 students land jobs. About one lakh students would pass out of technical institutions next year. In 2006, 55,000 students passed out, while in 2007 the number was about 75,000. Earlier, representatives from the IT majors hailed the attitude of students of the university and its affiliated colleges.
