Show the way to corporates in providing medicare, YSR tells NIMS

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday asked the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) to play the role of a mentor and show the way to the corporate hospitals in providing affordable medicare to the common man.

Speaking at the fourth convocation of NIMS, he lauded it for carving out a niche for itself in providing accessible and quality healthcare in an atmosphere in which the corporate hospitals were giving tertiary care at exorbitant cost.

Clarifying that he was not criticising corporate hospitals, he said NIMS, in contrast, was able to serve millions at affordable cost.

He said NIMS had conducted 1,500 of the 6,000 child heart surgeries and declared that the Government would support the institute in all its endeavours.

Health Minister K.Rosaiah said it was proposed to start a heart institute at NIMS university campus, Bibinagar, in Nalgonda district, at a cost of Rs.75 crores.

Delivering the convocation address, M. Venkateswarlu, Drug Controller-General of India, urged medicos to participate in clinical research and pharmaco-vigilance programmes to update themselves. The importance of clinical research had increased substantially. Besides, it offered excellent career opportunities.

NIMS Director D. Prasada Rao said it had received grants from the Department of Science and Technology to carry out research on stem cell technologies and regenerative medicine jointly with CCMB.

A project report for establishing a clinical research centre at NIMS had been prepared for submission to the department for grants.

The institute had initiated evaluation of a new diagnostic software, Nx Opinion, in collaboration with the Central Michigan University and M/s Robertson Technology research Institute, US.
