Pursue higher education, Maran urges graduates

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran on Sunday urged engineering graduates to pursue a master's degree, as a bachelor's degree meant little in today's competitive world.

Addressing the eighth Graduation Day of Sai Ram Engineering College here, he said graduates were increasingly considering working for a couple of years before pursuing higher education. However, in most cases, attractive pay packets offered to graduates prevented them from getting back to academics, he said.

"Be hardworking"

Underlining the significance of hard work, he cited President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi as examples of people who, despite their humble backgrounds, made it big thanks to their focus, determination, and hard work. The minister said one had to do things differently in order to make a mark.

Mr. Maran said he was keen on bringing more leading companies such as Nokia to India as he knew that a group of ancillary industries would come along, offering several job opportunities.

With China and Taiwan emerging as strong competitors to India, it was essential for Indian students to be well equipped to face the challenges, he told students.

Tambaram MLA S.R. Raja, Sriperumbudur MP A. Krishnaswamy, Sai Ram Engineering College chairman Leo Muthu and principal S. Seetharaman were present.

About 450 students received their degree certificates from the minister. About 20 students scored ranks within the top 50 of the university.
