AN EYESORE: Sewage overflowing in the TNHB complex in Krishnagiri. PHOTO: N. BASHKARAN
Krishnagiri: Lack of proper drainage disposal systems in the Tamil Nadu Old Housing Board (TNHB) complex in Krishnagiri has resulted in the area becoming a cesspool of sewage. With drainage water not cleared for months together, the entire complex has become highly vulnerable with a huge presence of vector mosquitoes. More than 50 per cent of the households with improperly covered cisterns have become an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. With the only pumping station for releasing sewage from the complex not in use, sewers overflow due to a burst in the drainage pipeline. According to Murugesan, a resident, "the failure of the municipality in clearing the drainage water has resulted in the area becoming an eyesore. The municipality should clear the drainage water on a regular basis to ensure free flow of water and also rectify the numerous faulty septic tanks within the complex. Though repeated representations have been made to the municipality nothing concrete has emerged till date." "Due to lack of a concrete plan to dispose of the sewage, the residents are forced to put up with the stench for the past several years. With sewage water flowing through the lanes of the colony, the residents have to wade through dirty water," says R. Natarajan, another resident. Though the colony was handed over by the TNHB to the municipality for maintenance, officials have been lax in taking steps for releasing the water, which has accumulated for the past few years, say residents. However, municipal officials say that the colony was handed over by the TNHB without any basic amenities, including proper garbage disposal systems. The municipality has resorted to clearing the drainage through lorries. It is hoped that the municipality would come forward with a concrete plan to do away with the mosquito breeding centres and also ensure an effective drainage disposal system to save the residents from mosquito menace.
