Stick to rules, auto drivers told

Staff Reporter

Week-long special drive by police begins today

VIJAYAWADA: The city police will organise 11th special traffic drive for a week from Tuesday to ensure that auto-rickshaw drivers followed the traffic rules dutifully. City Police Commissioner C.V. Anand on Monday issued a few guidelines for auto-rickshaw drivers on the eve of the special drive.

The drivers should carry their driving licence, registration certificate of the vehicle, insurance documents, the pollution under control certificate and the permit along with them. In addition, the drivers should wear the uniform and display the identity card issued by the police prominently. Mr. Anand said that a penalty of Rs. 100 would be levied if the drivers allowed any person to sit beside him on either side. Similarly, the rear view window of the vehicle should not be covered with advertisements or posters. The drivers and owners of the auto-rickshaws should ensure that the special numbers issued by the police were displayed according to the size and colours suggested by the police, he said.

Action would be taken against the drivers who parked their vehicles in bus bays and tended to jump the traffic signals. The police would confiscate the vehicles that did not comply with the safety norms. Similarly, auto-rickshaws would be confiscated and case would be registered if any driver was found in a drunken state, he said.
