Gownpalli case hearing adjourned

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday adjourned further hearing on petitions by three accused in the Gownpalli murder case challenging the trial court in Srinivasapura of Kolar district to complete by six months a murder trial involving the former Speaker and Congress MLA from Srinivasapura K.R. Ramesh Kumar.

K.S. Muniraju and two others had filed a petition questioning what they claimed was the inordinately long time given by the High Court to complete the trial.

They said the court had given the direction after the State Public Prosecutor (SPP) filed an application seeking extension of time to complete the trial.

Appearing for the State, the SPP submitted that the High Court had directed expeditious completion of the trial in the sensational Gownpalli murder case in which Mr. Ramesh Kumar and his brother Krishna Murthy are the accused.

He said a Division Bench of the High Court last month struck down the appointment of Thimmarayappa as Special Public Prosecutor and that the State needed more time to appoint a new person to the post.

He said there were two charge-sheets in the case and hence time was needed.

The case related to a person Ramakrishna Reddy complaining on March 31, 2003 before the Gownapalli police in Kolar district that Shamashankar Reddy was murdered near a forest off Thimmalavarapalli Road. Another person, Kadirappa, a Scheduled Caste (SC), was found dead nearby.

Justice A.C. Kabbin, who is hearing the application, adjourned further hearing on the case.
