Nagercoil: Founder president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazagam, Vijayakanth, has appealed all political parties not to politicise the fishermen issue. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday after participating in an agitation organised by Coastal Peace and Development Centre and Federation of Fishermen Association, he said that it was the bounden duty of both the Centre and the State to protect the fishermen. But the State and the Centre were trying to disown their responsibility. Before 1974, fishermen had the right to catch fish in both the Indian and Sri Lanka territorial waters. The same status should be restored so that this kind of unfortunate incidents could be prevented. Regarding the by-election to Madurai Central Assembly constituency, he said that the DMDK had decided to field its candidate. Later, he handed over Rs. 25,000 each to legal heirs of five fishermen who were killed and Rs. 5,000 each to four fishermen of Chinnathurai who were injured during firing at mid-sea by the Sri Lankan Navy. The State deputy secretary, Austin, accompanied the actor-turned-politician.
