NEW DELHI: India has a vested interest in a stable, prosperous and democratic Bangladesh, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is reported to have told Bangladesh Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed during a bilateral meeting on Monday. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Towhid Hossain told presspersons after the meeting, the first ever at the leadership-level between the two sides since Dr. Ahmed took over as Chief Adviser, that the talks were extremely positive in tone. "Both the Prime Minister and the Chief Adviser wanted to move the bilateral relationship forward," Mr. Hossain maintained. The idea was to move the relationship towards a "higher trajectory." Asked if Indian insurgent groups were being tackled by the new Bangladeshi Government, the Foreign Secretary replied that the two leaders did not into specifics. In reply to another query, Mr. Hossain stated that Foreign Secretary-level talks between the two countries would take place soon. According to him, a new, cross-border train service between the two countries, which had been approved in principle, would commence in the next three months.
