New HPCL head

A native of Kannur has taken over as Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPC), one of the country's largest companies.

Arun Balakrishnan, who took charge as chairman and managing director of HPCL on April 1, hails from Kannur town. He did his schooling at St. Michael's Anglo-Indian Boys High School and his pre-degree at the Sree Narayana College here before he went to the College of Engineering in Thrissur to study chemical engineering and later to the Indian Institute of Management— Bangalore, to acquire a post-graduate Diploma in Management.

Son of late physician T.P. Balakrishnan, Mr. Balakrishnan is younger brother of Ajith Balakrishnan, founder of Rediff.com.

Fiftysix-year-old Arun Balakrishnan had been serving as Director of Human Resources of the HPCL when he took over as the head of a public sector company with a turnover of over Rs.80,000 crore.
