Steve Waugh laments lack of zing at the WC

London: With the spirit of Caribbean culture missing during the World Cup matches, former Australian captain Steve Waugh feels the International Cricket Council and organisers of the event should have made effort to attract local people and youngsters to the empty stands.

"It's crazy. I don't get it. The Caribbean is a great place to play cricket, it was my favourite place in the world to play cricket — the crowds were so into the game, there was a lot of music, they got stuck in and talked about the game, they had fun," he said. "Then all of a sudden we see nothing for the World Cup. There is something clearly wrong there, with no music, no instruments," he was quoted as saying by Daily Telegraph.

Waugh said the high ticket prices and restriction on music instruments into the grounds put paid to the local participation in the matches.

"Someone has got it wrong, the pricing of tickets is too dear, they would not let instruments into the grounds, and it is part of the essence of Caribbean cricket. That's what it's all about," he said. — PTI
