Report on dacoities to be submitted to Government: Bharani

  • Villagers have been trained and made part of patrolling parties
  • Police conduct grama sabhas in villages to allay people's fears

PRECAUTIONARY STEPS: Subhash Bharani, Additional Director General of Police (Crime, Technical Services and Internal Security) addressing a press conference in Hubli on Tuesday.

HUBLI: Additional Director General of Police (Crime, Technical Services and Internal Security) Subhash Bharani will submit a report to the State Government shortly on the series of dacoities and thefts in Dharwad district.

Mr. Bharani told presspersons here on Tuesday that he had visited the villages where the dacoits had struck in recent days and would be submitting a study report on the same.

He said the dacoities that were reported in Dharwad district were different in the sense that the dacoits had attacked only families belonging to lower middle class and lower class. Normally it was the upper middle class and rich families that were targets of the dacoits, he said. Poor people were robbed of their meagre earnings, he said.

    Appeal

He said he would appeal to the people of Dharwad district not to be afraid and not heed rumours as the police had already taken steps to tackle the situation.

Additional police force had been deployed in villages. Under the leadership of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, police inspectors and sub-inspectors aided by four platoons of District Armed Reserve Police were taking care of the security arrangements, he said.

He said the police had already conducted grama sabhas in villages as a confidence building measure and to involve villagers in the bandobast arrangements.

Selected villagers had been trained and made part of the patrolling parties. To a question, he said the number of police personnel had also been increased.

    Vacant post

To a query on the vacant post of the Superintendent of Police in Dharwad district, Mr. Bharani said the appointment would be made after the ongoing Legislature session concludes.

    11 arrested

On the investigation into the series of robberies, he said already the police had arrested 11 persons, solving six cases of dacoities.

They were also on the lookout for four persons attached to the gang, he said. Prior to the press meet, Mr. Bharani held a review meeting on the law and order situation in the district.
