Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article on the Maharashtra Government's ban on sex education in schools (OP-ED, April 2). In the name of progressive thinking, we cannot allow the westernisation of our society. Knowledge on sex should be acquired only at the appropriate time. There is no need to expose young minds to it.
V. Pandy,
The present generation is fed on huge doses of obscenity by our television channels and the Internet. With teenage pregnancies and abortions on the rise, and an increase in the number of those affected by AIDS, sex education for children is a must.
Geetha Manian,
Schools are ideal places where students can get answers to basic questions on sex. Custom prevents parents in most families from discussing sex with their children.
Naushad Ahmad,
It is necessary to prevent children from learning from bad peers and obscene books about sex. A holistic approach should be adopted to sex education by making available standard textbooks on the Internet for the middleclass children. SHGs and AIDS awareness centres should open counselling wings for rural children.
G. Swaminathan,
The correct age to learn about sex is the age when children are in school. If they are denied information, they may turn to the Internet and cinema. Is it desirable?
M. Mithra Kiran,
