COLOMBO: The military on Tuesday claimed that at least 23 cadres of the Tamil Tigers were killed in continuing "humanitarian mission" to oust the LTTE from its remaining pocket of influence in the Batticaloa district. It said the LTTE camp called Nivartam base and a 120mm mortar launching point too were captured. An LTTE propaganda van, arms and ammunition and a store of paddy were recovered. On Monday, the LTTE launched attacks from north of Unachchi and south of Rukam. "The army retaliated with no damages to troops and causing heavy losses to the terrorists. This morning, the humanitarian mission continued facing LTTE attacks. The troops retaliated, killing 23 terrorists. Security forces have found dead bodies of 10 terrorists. Tiger terrorists had fled carrying other dead bodies and the injured," it said. Military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe told a news conference here that the LTTE was targeting innocent civilians unable to face the continuous defeats.
