Congress to contest Madurai byelection

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Congress, a constituent of the Democratic Progressive Alliance, will contest the byelection to the Madurai (West) Assembly constituency, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy said here on Tuesday.

He told reporters that in the May 2006 Assembly elections, Congress candidate N. Perumal had contested from the constituency. (The poll was necessitated following the death of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator S.V. Shanmugam in February).

Asked whether the party had started shortlisting candidates, Mr. Krishnasswamy replied, "Let the notification be issued first."

He said the Congress had decided to appoint district-level observers to ascertain the functioning of its field units in highlighting the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre and to make arrangements for celebrating the centenary of the Satyagraha agitation.

He expressed concern over reports of infighting among party functionaries during a review of the working of the party undertaken by some Members of the Legislative Assembly.

In the wake of the killing of five fishermen, Mr. Krishnasswamy said he, along with party leader M. Gajanathan, would visit Kanyakumari on Wednesday.

He said some sugar mills in the State were refusing to procure cane on the ground that the stocks were unregistered. The State Government should intervene and provide succour to cane growers.

On reports of terrorist activities in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Krishnasswamy said the State Government would deal firmly with such elements. He expressed satisfaction over the law and order situation.
