Tuticorin: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here demanding the authorities concerned to improve the working conditions of conservancy workers under various local bodies in the district. M.A. Dharmar, State secretary, Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Municipal Workers Federation, asked the Government to establish new residential quarters for conservancy workers employed at municipalities and other local bodies. He said service record book should be maintained for all conservancy workers at gram panchayats. "This would enable them to avail many social and economical welfare," he added. Pongal bonus should be released to those who were yet to receive it without any further delay. Gratuity should be given to the workers at the time of superannuation. He said the practice of deploying conservancy workers on contract should be stopped. T. Kumaravel, district secretary, and K. Ponraj, district president, of the CITU, spoke.
