Report "awaited" on remission of sentences

"Reforms should be effected in the Central Prison"

Puducherry : Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told the House during question time on Tuesday that the administration was awaiting report of the committee to decide the remission of sentences that the convicts were serving now in the Central Prison.

Replying to the plea of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam member A. Anbalagan that the Government could sanction remission particularly to those undergoing life-term in connection with certain offences. He said that necessary modification in the rules might be effected.

R. Siva (Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam) said that there were instances of convicts finding it difficult to come out on parole even on most important occasions.

A.M.H. Nazeem (DMK) said that the committee should not delay in taking a decision. A. Namasivayam (Congress) said that remission would be of help to the aged persons. He said that a 60-year-old women undergoing a seven-and-half-year term was facing severe setback.

R. Viswanathan (Communist Party India) said that reforms should be effected in the Central Prison. After listening their pleas, the Chief Minister said that the committee report was awaited in the matter.
