Tindivanam cracks down on illegal tap connections

Special Correspondent

Civic body says town is facing an acute water shortage

TINDIVANAM: In a bid to tackle the acute water shortage in Tindivanam, the municipality has started taking stringent measures against illegal tap connections. In the past few days it has disconnected hundreds of unauthorised connections with the help of officials and police, according to A. Bhoopalan, Municipal Chairman.

Mr. Bhoopalan said the town was facing water scarcity owing to this problem and the damage caused to the pipeline by the machinery deployed for widening the Vikkiravandi-Tindivanam road.

As against the total capacity of 36 lakh litres a day, the town was now getting hardly 21 lakh litres a day, thus resulting in a shortage of 15 lakh litres a day. It resulted in protests at many places.

The town traditionally depended upon the two water sources — Rettanai and Katrambakkam — for its drinking water requirements. Both tanks used to yield on an average 10 lakh litres of water per day during normal season.

But with the onset of summer, the storage in these two tanks had become minimal and hence, the supply had now fallen drastically to five lakh litres per day.
