Action against forest official

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said in the Legislative Assembly that action would be initiated against the Forest Department official concerned for recording that the Adichunchanagiri Math had encroached upon land in the Turahalli forest area.

Replying to D.K. Shivakumar (Congress), who demanded action against the official concerned, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the encroachment case had been foisted on the math.

Minister for Forests C. Chennigappa said the math had been built on the buffer zone and the land in question had not been measured. A survey of the land had been ordered.

44 malpractice cases reported

BANGALORE: Forty-four cases of malpractice were reported in the second year pre-university mathematics examination conducted across the State on Tuesday. All the candidates caught were debarred. Of them, 17 were from Gulbarga, nine from Raichur, six from Bijapur, three each from Bidar and Gadag and one each from Bagalkot, Bellary, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Mysore and Mandya districts, a press release from the Department of Pre-University Education said. — Staff Reporter

Kumaraswamy to visit Dharwad

DHARWAD: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will visit Dharwad on April 7, according to an official press release.

The Chief Minister will reach the Hubli airport at 3.40 p.m. He will leave for Dharwad at 4 p.m. to take part in the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations and a function to release a book by Patil Puttappa at Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha. The Chief Minister will leave for Bangalore by a special aircraft at 8.30 p.m. from the Hubli airport, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Bill collection agents plan rally

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Rajya Grama Vidyut Prathinidhigala Okkuta will hold a rally on April 9 to protest against "unscientific" targets and wage and service conditions to be imposed on them. All electricity supply companies hired agents to read meters and collect electricity bills as an employment generation measure in rural areas, Sharanappa, vice-president of the okkuta told presspersons here on Tuesday. The rally will demand, among other things, that the 3,972 agents spread throughout the State get their salaries within the stipulated time and are given benefits such as Provident Fund and insurance. — Staff Reporter

MLIRC reunion begins today

Belgaum: The 13th post-war reunion of Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) will be held at the MLIRC campus here from April 4 to 7. The Chief of the Army Staff and Col. Commandant of the MLIRC, Gen. J.J. Singh, will be the chief guest.

MYSORE: Almanac International Voluntary Adventure Youth Club, which has been conducting various adventure activities for the last few years, will hold a children's summer camp from April 7 to 9. Two die in explosion

BIJAPUR: Two children were killed and five others injured when a cylinder exploded at a house in Gachchinkatti colony here on Tuesday. Police said the victims had been identified as Manoj Parushram Kashinkunte (6) and Pratik Lakshman Kadkol (3). The injured have been admitted to BLDE Association's B.M. Patil Medical College hospital here. Primary investigations revealed that a spare cylinder kept in the house compound had exploded following continuous exposure to sunlight. — Staff Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) will conduct the counselling for admission to Postgraduate Medical and Dental courses for 2007-08 from April 9 to 13, on its campus in Jayanagar 4th T Block here. While the seats under Dental Entrance Quota will be available for selection on April 9 and April 10 up to 1 p.m., the seats under Medical Physically Handicapped Quota and Entrance Quota could be selected on April 10 from 1.30 p.m. onwards. The Medical Entrance Quota seats will be available for selection on April 11 and 12, while In-Service Quota seats of Medical and Dental faculties could be selected on April 13. Workers take out jatha

Kolar: Hundreds of workers of Universal Health Care Products (UHCP), a food package industrial unit, here took out a jatha and staged a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner's office on Tuesday demanding non-closure of the unit. About 300 workers of the unit urged authorities to direct the management of the industry not to close the unit. They submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez. The workers, led by union president H.M. Yallappa and secretary M. Lakshman, started the jatha from the unit in industrial area at Tamak, 4 km from here. BANGALORE: The Dalit and Jathyatheetha Janpara Sanghatanegala Okkuta will hold a demonstration on April 6 to demand action against P.S. Prabhakaran, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences only after the CBI inquiry was completed. Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, N.V. Narasimhaiah of AHINDA said that Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya and the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad were targeting Mr. Prabhakaran. Sirsi: The Kanara District Central Cooperative Bank has received Rs. 17.12 crore from the State Government for waiving farmers' loans in different cooperative societies in the district, as provided in the budget. As many as 33,918 cooperative members would benefit from the same if loans of up to Rs. 25,000 are waived. Sources said that the amount received was one-third of what was required. — Correspondent

Student debarred in Chitradurga

CHITRADURGA: The vigilance team here on Tuesday debarred one student of Brahammamath College of the city from attending the examination, as he was found copying while writing Maths paper.

Sources from the Department of Pre University Education told The Hindu that 3,197 students had enrolled and 2,967 students appeared for the examination. The number of absentees was 230. — Staff Correspondent

Bank does business of Rs. 100 crore

BELLARY: The Gandhi Nagar branch of the Pragathi Grameena Bank in Bellary city has done business worth Rs. 100 crore during the year 2006-07.

This branch is the first among the regional rural banks in South India to record business of Rs. 100 crore, according to P. Janardhan Reddy, senior manager of the branch.

The bank mobilised Rs. 78.54 crore deposits and disbursed loan to the tune of Rs. 29.92 crore taking the total business to Rs. 108 crore. In addition, the branch had achieved all the targets set for the year, he said. — Staff Correspondent
