Cabinet subcommittee is considering their demand for regularisation of services, Chief Minister tells Assembly

  • There are 16,769 daily wage employees in 27 government departments
  • Cabinet panel formed in January is expected to submit report soon

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday told the Legislative Assembly that the Government would take a decision on regularising the services of 16,769 daily wage employees working in 27 departments based on the recommendations of a Cabinet subcommittee.

Replying to B.R. Patil (JD-S) during Question Hour, he said the committee was formed on January 5, 2007, and it was expected to submit a report shortly.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the matter was also before the Supreme Court, and the Government was waiting for the verdict.

Based on the apex court verdict and the subcommittee report, the Government would take a decision on regularising the services of the employees on humanitarian grounds, the Chief Minister said.

A large number of daily wage employees work in the departments of Public Works (1,069), Water Resources (2,195), Sericulture (803), Forest (5,675), Horticulture (861), Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (3,967) and Social Welfare (661). Based on court orders, the services of 300 daily wage staff had been regularised since 1984, Mr. Kumaraswamy said.

While G.V. Srirama Reddy (CPI-M) urged the Government to increase the wages of such employees, many others cutting across party lines appealed to the Chief Minister to regularise their services.

    Dam planned

The State Government has decided to construct a small dam across the Nethravathi at a cost of Rs. 40 crore to provide drinking water to the people of Mangalore city.

In reply to a question from Krishna Palemar of Surathkal, Mr. Kumaraswamy said an order was issued in February to construct the dam and lay pipelines for the supply of drinking water.

A plan had been prepared to construct the dam near Tumbe. Now tankers were being used to supply water to some parts of Mangalore, he said.
