Bangalore: The Opposition on Tuesday scored a victory in the Legislative Assembly with Home Minister M.P. Prakash agreeing to order an inquiry by the Corps of Detectives into the alleged high-handed behaviour of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mysore district, which prompted the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to stage a dharna three days ago. The Home Minister said the police officer would be asked to proceed on leave pending the inquiry. He said it was the duty of the Government to protect legislators' privileges. He would speak to the Additional Director-General of Police, CoD, to immediately start the inquiry into the incident. Speaker Krishna told the House that he had accorded permission to refer the notice of breach of privilege sent by Mr. Siddaramaiah to the Privileges Committee. The Home Minister assured Ramesh Kumar and Krishna Byregowda (both Congress) that he would order police officers in Kolar district to conduct an impartial investigation into the murder of Srinivas, belonging to a Scheduled Tribe, for contesting from a general ward in Srinivasapura Assembly constituency. He also promised that the Government would not protect any of the accused. Mr. Ramesh Kumar, who raised the issue, demanded the filing of an additional charge sheet after recording the statement of the parents and wife of Srinivas, who was murdered in their presence. He wanted the investigation entrusted to another officer. He suspected that some persons were pressuring the present investigating officer not to book the accused persons. The police had not arrested the accused and produced them in court despite the non-bailable warrants issued against them.
