Centre writes to EC on sugar package

NEW DELHI: The Government has written to the Election Commission saying that the Food Ministry had not notified a decision of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on a sugar package for the millers.

The package allows for creation of a 20-lakh tonne sugar buffer with the industry and providing export subsidy to the millers. The Ministry had sought the Commission's clearance before notifying the decision in view of the coming elections in Uttar Pradesh. However, the Commission had asked the Government to explain why the decision was announced before notification.
