Dean of Medical College hospital passes away

SALEM: A. Rajachandran (58), Dean of Salem Government Medical College Hospital, passed away in a private hospital in Kerala on Monday.

Dr. Rajachandran assumed office as Dean of the hospital in February this year. Mr. Rajachandran, a native of Cuddalore district, earlier served as professor and head of nephrology in Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. He went to Kochi to get treatment for heart ailment and died at the hospital. He is survived by wife and two sons.

Doctors, nurses and other paramedical personnel of the hospital paid homage on Tuesday.

Demonstration held

SALEM: Members of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding that the Central and State Governments control prices of essential commodities.

They raised slogans against the Centre and the State governments for failing to bring down the prices. People in the lower strata of society were severely affected owing to increase in the prices of food products. The governments should take immediate steps to bring down the prices. A similar demonstration was organised in Namakkal also.

Quota demanded

SALEM: Members of the Salem unit of All India Lawyers Association carried placards to the integrated court complex here on Tuesday demanding that the Centre take steps to implement 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes in higher educational institutions.

Woman killed

METTUR: A woman was killed and two others injured when a jeep hit them at Mecheri, near here, on Tuesday. The police said Valliyammal (60) of Mecheri and two others were walking on the road when the jeep lost control and hit them, killing her. The injured have been admitted to the Government Hospital here.
