BANGALORE: A seven-storey building called "Jnana Bhandar" is the symbol of S. Nijalingappa College's latest expansion drive. The block, featuring a multi-storeyed library, computer department, tourism department, sports complex and the fashion and apparel design (FAD) department, was inaugurated here on Tuesday by Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti inaugurated the library. The library is spread over 12,000 sq. ft., and has about 85,000 volumes of books.

MTA course

The Master in Tourism Administration (MTA) Department was inaugurated by former Minister R.V. Deshpande. The college is one of the four institutions in Karnataka which offers a five-year integrated MTA course. The Government has sanctioned Rs. 80 lakh for the course.

Former Minister V. Somanna inaugurated the FAD department, which is equipped with laboratories for clothing, pattern making, textile testing, textile wet processing, fashion illustration and computer aided design laboratory.

The computer science department was also inaugurated by Mr. Shankaramurthy. The sports complex, inaugurated by MLA Narendra Babu, has facilities for indoor games and a separate multi-gym facility for boys and girls.

The building stands out for the murals on its exterior wall, which shows a globe and students with laptops and books in their hand.

Lots of avenues

Mr. Shankaramurthy said, "Lots of avenues are open to our children, they can stand on a par with the rest of the world. So, for that to happen we should create an environment for our children. Hence libraries such as "jnana bhandara" are necessary. It should grow to greater standards."

Mr. Deshpande said, "This century demands quality work, hard work and competition. Only bookish knowledge is of no use."
