Banking solutions from students

Staff Correspondent

Suggestions came up at elocution contest on role of banks in rural development

  • `Advise bankers to keep interest rates low'
  • `Educate beneficiaries on proper use of credit'

MANGALORE: It is a well-known fact that banks shape their policies according to guidelines laid down by the Reserve Bank of India.

Bankers have now decided to accept newer ideas on banking practices and that too from relatively fresh and young minds. They have got interesting suggestions from school and college students.

The suggestions include advising bankers to keep interest rates low, educating beneficiaries on proper use of credit, ensuring that the various schemes reach the needy.

Another interesting observation made by students was that there was lack of knowledge about various schemes among the public.

The suggestions were given by those who participated in elocution competition on `Role of banks in rural development' organised as part of the "Suvarna Karnataka" celebrations by the Syndicate Bank.

They were discussed threadbare at a recent meeting of the district consultative committee and the district-level review committee for banking development in Dakshina Kannada.

According to A. Gopal, lead district manager, Syndicate Bank, the suggestions will be forwarded to the State-level Bankers Committee.

    Urban areas

Another interesting point made by a competitor was the fact that most regional rural banks have their presence predominantly in urban and semi-urban areas, he said.

The observations made by students augured well for the future of banks.

It was indicative of the fact that they had clearly understood the role played by banks in solving problems faced by the rural masses.

Bankers would benefit if they implemented some of the suggestions given by the students, he said.
