CII survey reveals State's top sectors

Special Correspondent

Textile, IT industry and manufacturing sectors post growth

HYDERABAD: Textile industry in the State registered a growth of 20-25 per cent between October 2006 and March 2007, as opposed to its previous half-yearly performance, according to a survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Announcing the findings of the survey here on Tuesday, CII said that the manufacturing sector's performance was buoyant posting a growth of 10-15 per cent in the said period, while earnings of information technology sector went up by 10-15 per cent.

Pitfalls

However, the IT industry has been suffering due to shortage of factors like quality manpower, sufficient bandwidth, space for expansion in cities, and quality and uninterrupted power supply.

The CII carried out the survey to analyse the performance of the top five sectors of the southern States during October 2006-March 2007 and to provide an outlook for April-September 2007. The key sectors in the State, based on their contributions to the Gross State Domestic Product, were agro-based industries, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, IT and textiles.

Industry leaders in the textile sector, which registered a growth in revenue to the tune of 10-15 per cent, felt that availability of quality power, raw materials and infrastructure and flexible labour laws would further propel growth.

Similarly, the manufacturing sector wanted better handling of goods at ports.

Agro industries

The performance of agro-based industry was almost stagnant, though exports posted a rise by 5-8 per cent. Though production in pharma industry went up by 5-10 per cent, exports remained stagnant in last six months.
