`UPA policies strengthen BJP'

Special Correspondent

Gurudas Dasgupta

HYDERABAD: CPI Parliamentary Party leader Gurudas Dasgupta said that the lopsided economic policies implemented by United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre would only help the Bharatiya Janata Party regain its strength.

"The Centre is creating a situation wherein the BJP's strength is growing," Mr. Dasgupta told reporters here on Tuesday. Asked why the Left Parties were supporting UPA in spite of their reservations, Mr. Dasgupta said , "We don't want mid-term polls," adding his party also did not wish to contribute to the further consolidation of BJP.

Creating billionaires

Terming the recent budget `anti-poor and pro rich', Mr. Dasgupta said the economic policies of UPA had only produced more billionaires in the country.

There were 36 billionaire families, whose combined assets were more than 6-lakh crores. "This is more than the budget Finance Minister P. Chidambaram presented in Parliament," he added.
