BIJAPUR: Navraspur Utsav, a three-day cultural and music festival, has been postponed for the second time. It will now be held from May 4 to May 6. The annual festival, which is normally held in January because of the pleasant weather at that time of the year, had initially been postponed to the first week of April. While a shortage of funds was stated to be the reason for the postponement, sources told The Hindu that the decision had reportedly been taken after complaints were made that the organisers were "forcibly" collecting donations for the event. The issue was brought up at a preparatory meeting convened here on Saturday by Minister for Textiles Appasaheb Pattanashetti, who is in charge of the district. It was mentioned at the meeting that Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin had sent out a letter to local merchants asking them to donate Rs. 50,000 each for the event.
`Little reason'
Ramesh Bidnur of the Bijapur Yuva Horata Vedike said that as the 350th year of Gol Gumbaz had been celebrated on a grand scale last year, there was little reason to spend Rs. 40 lakh on the event this year.
