BHUBANESWAR: Buoyed by rising demand for iron ore in the international market, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) has reported record handling of traffic to the volume of 38.52 million tonnes during the just-concluded financial year registering a growth of 16.34 per cent over the previous year. In the year 2005-2006, the premier port on the eastern coast handled 33.11 million tonnes of cargo. Addressing a press conference here on Monday evening, PPT Chairman K. Raghuramaiah said with the record performance, the port had been posting continuous growth of traffic since the last five years. The port handled 11.88 million tonnes iron ore last fiscal posting a growth of 15.64 per cent over 10.27 million tonnes during 2005-2006. Moreover, there was growth marked in fertiliser raw material, coking coal and other cargo segments last year.
Negative growth
However, container cargo and thermal coal represented a negative growth during the 2006-2007 fiscal. The PPT earned a total operating income of Rs. 572.40 crores in 2006-2007 compared to Rs. 513.50 crores in the previous year, he said. "After an operating expenditure of Rs. 277.63 crores and other adjustments, the surplus stands at Rs. 198.55 crores," Mr. Raghuramaiah said. Similarly, the PPT came up with an improved performance in handling vessels during 2006-2007. Altogether, 1,452 vessels were handled during the last fiscal as against 1,330 vessels in the previous year. The PPT said its proposed deep draught iron ore and coal berth got administrative approval on March 30.
