Staff Reporter

LVPEI and Drushti Daan sign MoU

BHUBANESWAR: L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and Drushti Daan on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a modern eye bank on the campus of LVPEI at Patia here.

The MoU marked the first private endeavour in the city to establish such a facility.

Advantages

"While the Bhubaneswar-LVPEI has the expertise in tissue harvesting, evaluation, preservation, and distribution in addition to knowledge management and capacity-building, Drushti Daan has the skills in public awareness, advocacy and networking," said Sudha Sundararajan, working president of Drushti Daan.

"The Drushti Daan Eye Bank will be a community eye bank. The facility will employ state-of-the-art cornea processing technology for quality tissue and successful cornea transplantation," she said.

Community facility

Ms. Sundararajan said this community eye bank approach would not only help in collection of large number of cornea but also make safe and high quality corneal tissue accessible to everyone who needed corneal transplantation in the community in an equitable manner.

Mutual cooperation

She said the organisations decided to increase their mutual cooperation by establishing `Drushti Daan eye bank', which is intended to function as a nodal eye bank in the State.

So far, Drushti Daan collected 34 eyes and had been promised another 7,000, Ms. Sundararajan said, adding that the bank would help preserve these eyes.

Krushnachandra Padhy, president of Drushti Daan, and Taraprasad Das, Director of Bhubaneswar LVPEI, signed the MoU in the presence Gullapalli N. Rao, Chairman of LVPEI, and Paul J. Dubord, Medical Director, Operation Eyesight Universal, Canada.
