It was a day when the young women of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) ladies organisation decided to honour the achievements of young women for their exemplary work in their chosen field.

Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO) felicitated ten young women achievers at a function in the Capital on Tuesday.

The women were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the sectors of health care, fashion, sports, media, classical music, business, interior designing, community service, visual art and performing arts.

The award winners are Sangita Reddy, Ranna Gill, Shilpi Singh, Shereen Bhan, Meeta Pandit, Pia Singh, Raseel Gujral Ansal, Captain Indrani Singh, Bharti Kher and Aditi Mangaldas.

Giving away the award to the women, Rajya Sabha member Najma Heptulla says, "It is time the society accepted women. It is important to give birth to the girl child and not to kill it in the womb."

Beyond business

The need to look beyond business interests and address the issues of human suffering and injustice was stressed upon by social activist Nafisa Ali.

"Years after the Godhra violence there are still people of the minority community who continue to live in tents and plastic sheets," says Ali.

The women whose work earned them the recognition said there was no easy "mantra" to success but persistence, making use of the opportunities available and not allowing one's self to be bogged down by stereotypes were the key.

"We are women who have had more opportunities and benefits than the bulk of Indian women," says Sangita Reddy who was felicitated for her contribution to the health sector. "So, we cannot leave this place without making a difference," she adds.

"It is important to carry on regardless of whatever the circumstances," says Captain Indrani Singh who has been recognized for her community service. "The more challenging the circumstances, the more fun it is," she adds.

Speaking in the occasion Chairperson of YFLO Radhika Backliwal Narain said the purpose of the event "was to celebrate the power of shakti." P. Anima
