New transport plan for Rajasthan soon

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Rajasthan will have a Master Transport Plan by June this year to enhance transport facilities and to connect far-flung areas of the State by public transport system.

The move is after taking into account the increasing pressure on the existing transport set up in the State due to population explosion and the non-availability of transport facilities in many parts.

A high-level meeting chaired by Transport Minister Yunus Khan at the Parivahan Bhawan here on Monday noted that in Jaisalmer and Barmer districts alone there existed 800 villages which did not have any public transport facility.

The Principal secretary, Home and Transport, V.S.Singh, Transport Commissioner Jagdish Chandra and the managing director of Rajasthan Road Transport Corporation, R.P.Jain, attended the meeting.

"The Master Transport Plan would select destinations in Jaisalmer-Barmer and other districts for creating the much needed transport facilities," Mr.Khan noted.

Development facilities

The Master Plan would also take up development of facilities such as drinking water, canteens and rest rooms at the bus stands, he said.

Each route would be provided with maximum permits so that the issue of overloading could be curbed, it was pointed out.

The Transport Commissioner said details of the existing road links had been sought from the Public Works Department, Rajasthan Agriculture Marketing Board and other agencies for the preparation of the Master Plan. The attempt was to make Rajasthan a model State in the whole country in linking all the villages with transport connectivity, he said.

Record collection

The Minister on the occasion congratulated the Transport department for the record revenue collection of Rs.1, 015 crores for the year 2006-07.

This is an increase of Rs.107 crores from the previous year. The amount exceeds the target set for the year by Rs.65 crores.
