Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is running a trial of the electronic ticketing devices for conductors on board four of its deluxe services on the 21-G route.

The conductor punches in the codes for the boarding and destination stops and the machine generates an electronic ticket. Transport officials believe that large-scale use of the machine will help them improve efficiency of conductors as well as generate data that could help them improve their service itself. A senior MTC official said: "We can collate the data from the ticketing machines to find out which are the busy sectors."

Such machines have already been used in the government-run transport corporations in Bangalore and other parts of Karnataka.

Interestingly the machines, MTC officials said, eliminate another stigma attached to tickets through manual process: saliva.
