Establishing exclusive two-wheeler battery unit proposed

HYDERABAD: Tata AutoComp GY Batteries Ltd. will be expanding its Ranjangaon factory to produce two million four-wheeler batteries in about three years at a cost of Rs. 100 crores.

Disclosing this at a press conference after launching the Tata-Green eco-friendly batteries in Hyderabad market on Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer of the company Yogesh Dhawan said the company also proposed to establish an exclusive two-wheeler battery unit at a cost of Rs. 60 crores to Rs. 70 crores.

The batteries, currently catering to the needs of passenger cars and utility vehicles, would be made for commercial vehicles and farm vehicles soon. The company was primarily looking at pan-Indian presence by targeting the 60 per cent of unorganised sector by educating users through awareness camps.

Tie-ups

The company was also negotiating with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for long-term tie-ups. He said the company was offering the batteries at a price lesser than Rs. 600 to Rs. 700 compared to the premium batteries of competitors. This price would be closer to the standard batteries offered by other companies. For instance the company's battery suiting a Maruti Suzuki car would cost Rs. 3,070, as opposed to Rs. 3,700 charged by the competitor in the market.

The batteries, made with Calcium-Calcium technology, were more eco- friendly than the products of the competitors, said Rajiv Malik, head of marketing of the company.
